Learn More about Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso is the largest of the five villages of the Cinque Terre on the Ligurian coast and has the most beaches in the area. The town is divided into two distinct parts: the beach and the seaside on the west side and the old town on the east side, accessible through a tunnel or around a small promontory.

The beach itself is in the center of town and is quite long. It is a mixture of sand and pebbles and is in a very picturesque setting with rocky outcrops on either side and is one of the few beaches in Cinque Terre, it is therefore very popular among tourists and locals.

You can explore the old town of Monterosso al Mare. It is located on a small hill and has an interesting center made up of old houses and alleys, as well as the famous 13th-century church of San Giovanni Battista with its characteristic striped façade. Higher up the town, you can see another important religious monument, the seventeenth-century Cappuccini convent.

Among the other historical monuments, you can see several other churches, as well as various Genoese fortifications that were built in the 16th century to defend the city against attacks by Saracen pirates.

The coast has an additional interest because of the statues that overlook the beach and the entire coast, which gives an even more impressive dimension to the coast. From Monterosso there are beautiful hiking trails such as the famous Via dell'Amore. The identifying symbol of the town is the famous Gigante (Giant), an original 46 feet-high (14-meter) statue representing the god Neptune.

Monterosso al Mare is a very rich city in terms of tourism, between its world-famous beaches, its many historical monuments that are worth the detour and its breathtaking landscapes to come and explore in hiking, you will not be disappointed by this enchanting city.
